Jaap Buitendijk

Motion Picture Stills Photographer

Jaap Buitendijk is an acclaimed film stills photographer whose images have helped shape the visual identity of some of contemporary cinema’s most iconic films.

From the exuberant world of Barbie to the gravitas of 12 Years a Slave, his work is known for capturing not just individual moments, but the emotional and visual essence of a story.

Originally from the Netherlands, Jaap moved to the UK in 1990 and studied documentary photography at Newport School of Art. It was there that he began exploring the relationship between documentary practice and the constructed reality of filmmaking — an approach that continues to inform his work, combining cinematic composition with a documentary sensitivity to authenticity and moment.

He has since worked extensively on major international productions including Harry Potter, Gladiator, Bridge of Spies, Children of Men and Wuthering Heights, creating key art, behind-the-scenes stills and character portraits for leading directors and studios worldwide.
